I have experience working with individuals on a variety of issues. My specialties include work with anxiety, addiction, OCD, and trauma. My process with clients is very solution focused in- nature. I aim to utilize the strengths clients already possess to bring progress into all facets of their life. I also believe that utilizing the values of clients to guide therapeutic work is essential to meaningful and lasting change. While navigating change, I assist clients in learning to tolerate distress, navigate difficult emotions, while finding effectiveness and fulfillment in their day to day lives. I hope that by being authentic in my role as a therapist I can facilitate this process and create an environment for clients that is both safe, secure, and motivating. I appreciate the opportunity to join my clients in their change process and look forward to meeting you and answering any questions you may have about my services. I have extensive experience working with individuals seeking recovery, in addition to families and couples coping with the effects of addiction/alcoholism. My philosophy of addiction treatment includes both abstinence based and harm reduction, whichever the client feels fits their needs, as well as integration into recovery communities if desired.

Welcome. People come to therapy for a range of reasons. For over 13 years I've worked with individuals 18+ years old struggling with mood, self-esteem, anxiety or worry, relationships, identity, loss, trauma, and life transitions. Working in a college counseling center is part of my prior experience. If you are interested in “depth therapy,” or have tried therapy before and the benefits didn’t stick, my approach may appeal to you. My specialty is called psychodynamic psychotherapy. This means you will be invited to begin each session with whatever comes to mind, and together we explore your inner experiences (emotions, sensations, thoughts, beliefs, expectations, dreams) with a focus on seeking to understand you and what’s troubling you. I can help us “read between the lines” for themes or patterns that contribute to feeling stuck, which may have been previously out of awareness, and which can now inform daily life and relieve symptoms. I am also certified to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a technique that can help heal trauma symptoms impacting current life. While our work centers on you as an individual, none of us exist outside of the broader socioeconomic and cultural systems we are in. These pressures and influences around us are also real and crucial to recognize. Psychotherapy is an opportunity to deal with issues in a way that is difficult to do alone. I can accompany you with my undivided listening, consistent availability, an appointment day and time safeguarded only for you, and commitment to taking you seriously.

I help folks ages 18+ in NY, CT, OR, and FL who are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationships, and life transitions. I am a compassionate and nonjudgmental therapist who prioritizes creating a space in which my clients feel “held,” heard, and helped. My approach is personalized, collaborative, and tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals. My practice is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and utilizes a range of techniques including awareness of sensations in the body, narrative interventions, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. I believe everyone has the capacity to heal and that meaningful transformations take place in the context of safe and supportive relationships, when we feel seen, understood, and accepted unconditionally. Together, we will process your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to reduce suffering and increase joy, fulfillment, and success. The bottom line: I meet you where you are—with patience, warmth, kindness, and insight. I will assist in identifying and strengthening your own inner resources and wisdom, so we can work more effectively with challenges and pain on the road to a more satisfying life. You don’t have to do this alone.

You may feel stuck in painful relationship patterns, overwhelmed by anxiety or self-criticism, emotionally disconnected, or weighed down by experiences that continue to impact your present. Perhaps you find yourself overthinking relationships, feeling unsure of your needs, struggling to feel fully understood, or longing to feel more grounded and connected in your life. Many of the clients I work with are seeking deeper self-understanding, more fulfilling relationships, and the freedom to live more authentically rather than from survival patterns. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, attachment wounds, relationship difficulties, identity concerns, and emotional disconnection. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic therapy, helping you develop greater self-awareness, flexibility, and trust in yourself by exploring the experiences that shape how you approach the world. I view therapy as a collaborative and compassionate space where your story can be explored with curiosity, honesty, and care. Over time, many clients begin to feel more grounded in themselves, more secure in relationships, and more able to move through life with greater clarity, authenticity, and intention.

Aloha, my name is Mahina. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and sole practitioner / owner of Honu Healing LLC, offering individual psychotherapy to adults of all ages and walks of life. Many of the people wanting my support are feeling burdened by anxiety, sadness, or grief, overwhelmed by a variety of stressors, or simply worn down by internal and external elements. Sometimes these experiences lead to self-defeating/sabotaging thoughts and behaviors, feeling disconnected from oneself or others, or struggling with cycles of shame and self-doubt. While these challenges are deeply human, they often impact our relationships, sense of security and identity, ability to be our authentic selves, and our capacity to fully function. It is my heartfelt honor to support individuals through current or lifelong challenges. I specialize in helping adults navigate traumatic experiences, grief, transitions, spirituality, and stress related to school, work, or relationships. I am here to help and guide you with effective, lasting solutions to persistent struggles. My approach is tailored to your unique needs and goals. We will explore habits that are not helpful in your relationships with yourself or others. I will help you reclaim your agency with empowering tools and knowledge and guide you toward applying this in your daily life in self-affirming, embodied ways. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, engaging, gently challenging, and often playful. My clinical approach is multi-disciplinary and rooted in psychodynamic theory, attachment theory, and humanistic psychology. I also have a background in integrative health and wellness, which can contribute to a more in-depth perspective on treatment. In addition, my work is relational and informed by the belief and the research that the essence of therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist. It is this relationship that can encourage true and thorough transformation. My style is genuine, collaborative, interpersonal, direct, and non-judgemental, and I encourage clients to be true to themselves and transparent. Although treatment is based on an individual's needs and goals, primary objectives in treatment are to help clients (re)connect to their confidence and curiosity and to reinforce their capacity and resiliency.

The typical challenges people face are embedded in fear of rejection, loneliness and disconnection - not feeling likable and lovable. Meaningful living can be achieved by acknowledging this fear and acting intentionally to create love, authenticity, and congruence. I believe effective counseling is grounded in a trusting and affirming working alliance. I work from an interpersonal perspective, meaning our professional relationship is the key to a positive and productive experience. Grounding my training in Existential-Humanistic theory, I seek to support your effort to find personal meaning and self-understanding, to explore your lived experience and discover the most genuine you. I offer support to achieve insight and the tools to cultivate purposeful transformation, enabling you to live a meaningful life in the face of uncertainty and potential suffering. We all take turns with suffering; we all take turns with joy. You can feel accomplished and connected; I can help.
