I believe therapy means making you feel deeply known and accepted, and by creating a warm and secure bond opens the space for long-lasting, personal growth. I appreciate how some old habits you have picked up at an earlier point may no longer serve you now. The process of understanding yourself with compassion and learning new ways of being in the world isn't always easy, but I'll be with you every step of the way. Together we can find and solve the "stuck points" holding you back from living a full and meaningful life. I work with individual adults focusing on mood and personality issues. As your therapist, my goal is to help you live up to the best version of yourself. My approach centers on harnessing your unique strengths in building the bridge between where you are and where you want to be. I take an integrative approach that reflects my dual training in transference-based theory such as Schema and evidence-based theory such as CBT. Thus, my treatment balances the exploration of experiential life with actionable change.

I work with individuals who are curious to pursue change - whether this be by reflecting on obstacles, with a specific goal in mind, or simply because something feels as if it is not "working" for them. One does not have to be 100% motivated to use therapy well, instead, s/he/they can come to sessions with any sense of willingness to explore.
This is a challenging time for all of us, but you are not alone. I am offering phone and video therapy sessions available throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am offering sliding scale sessions. I work to help increase your awareness of the emotional patterns you're living with in your day-to-day life. The more self-aware you become, the easier it is to identify what makes you happy and what doesn’t. As you grow in self-acceptance, you will find new ways of living your life. Reach out and let's see if we are a good fit.

You may feel stuck, uncertain about yourself, overwhelmed by life transitions, or carrying the weight of the past. These moments hold emotional truths that deserve to be seen, heard, and understood. When we meet them with care and curiosity, they can become powerful entry points to deeper self-discovery and lasting self-compassion. The process of turning inward, increasing self-awareness and self-kindness, can be complex, but it often opens the door to meaningful growth. My role is to offer a safe, judgment-free space where this kind of exploration can unfold. I feel honored to walk alongside individuals as they reconnect with the parts of themselves that may feel lost, silenced, or in conflict. My approach is person-centered and psychodynamic, grounded in empathy and with a deep respect for your unique story. Together, we’ll explore your inner world at a pace that feels right for you. Individuals often share that they feel at ease in our sessions, able to speak freely, even when the emotions are difficult to name. Therapy with me is a collaborative process, grounded in trust, where you can feel empowered to take steps that align with your values. If you're ready to begin, or even just curious, I welcome you to reach out!

Are you experiencing a significant life transition, struggling with anxiety, or seeking to heal from generational or identity-based trauma? You deserve a safe and supportive environment where you can feel seen, heard, and empowered. I specialize in assisting clients from diverse backgrounds—including Latinx, African American, and LGBTQIA communities—in exploring their experiences and developing the skills to thrive. I'm Xioel Terrero, a bilingual (English/Spanish) licensed mental health counselor with degrees from Fordham University and Manhattan College. As an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, I understand the emotional challenges of adapting to a new culture while navigating issues of identity, exclusion, and resilience. These experiences have profoundly influenced my work and fueled my dedication to social justice and equitable care.
I offer compassionate and transformative psychotherapy to individuals 18+ throughout the lifespan, drawing upon both traditional and innovative tools to provide highly individualized and attuned support. I have expertise working with anxiety (including social anxiety), life transitions, grief, trauma, work-related stress, family conflicts, and relationship issues. I also work frequently with spirituality and religion, multicultural issues, adjustment disorder, and concerns relating to college students and recent graduates. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with nearly 15 years of professional experience. I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Religious Studies and graduating Cum Laude. I received my Master in Social Work degree at NYU. I have a certificate in Relational Psychotherapy and utilize mindfulness-based tools like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In addition, I have trained in IFS (Internal Family Systems) level 1 and the beginning and intermediate levels of Somatic Experiencing (a body-based approach), innovative therapeutic tools that I incorporate into my work. If a client already working with a primary therapist wishes to pursue an adjunct treatment focusing specifically on SE or IFS, I can design a therapy program to support these goals. I also provide adjunct therapy specifically targeting social anxiety. Before transitioning to private practice, I was a staff therapist at Columbia University Counseling and Psychological Services for eight years. I have extensive experience offering psychotherapy to adults of all ages, leading groups focused on creating connections and managing anxiety, and presenting virtual and in-person workshops to large audiences in professional and educational contexts. At this time, I see clients via telehealth throughout New York State and do not offer in-person sessions. Please feel free to reach out to me to discuss how I may support you.

“I just want to feel happy.” Or “why are relationships so hard for me?” Or maybe, “I wish I didn’t worry ALL the time.” If these lines have run through your mind, you’re not alone. And you’ve come to the right place! My style is warm, genuine, and practical. I use humor and honesty to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can be your true, authentic self. Taking the leap into therapy can be daunting and it’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with. I encourage you to take the first step and schedule a free 15 min consultation to discuss your goals and how I can help you reach them. I look forward to getting to know you!
