Therapists for college students near New York, NY
With over 8 years of experience in mental health and as an Asian, Queer Native New Yorker, I deeply resonate with you if a part of you is a high-achiever, perfectionist, or people-pleaser, yet you also find yourself prioritizing others over yourself. You appear to be put together, but deep down, you're stuck in processing intergenerational trauma. You feel overwhelmed to tap into this discomfort. But you’re ready to be with it, to bring a change that allows you to slow down, to feel, and to build your inner resources for generative connection. Most of all, you’re ready to embody the wisdom of your lineages and roots. I want to help you get there. As an EMDR trained therapist, I specialize in working with people of diverse backgrounds — high achievers, adoptees, helping/healthcare/finance/tech professionals, young adults, athletes, creatives, QTBIPOC, & immigrants — who have trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, or ADHD. Together, we will find your authentic voice through experiential, integrative, anti-oppressive practices, EFT, Gestalt, parts work, and somatic approaches. I’ll meet you where you are on your unique journey and offer you the support you need to live and thrive abundantly. A life where you are empowered by your body's wisdom is possible. You don’t have to continue feeling disconnected, and you don’t have to do it alone. Call or email me today for a free video consult call. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi! If you’re seeking out therapy, then it’s likely you’re a little nervous. If so, take a deep breath! I’m here to create a space where you feel safe and supported as you share your personal story. In therapy we will focus on practical skills for addressing your symptoms and explore how your story of self has been shaped by both current and past relationships. I enjoy working with emerging adults, adolescents, and anyone eager to build a “life worth living.” I believe that in healing there is room for humor. And that my authenticity allows us to do great work together. When I’m not working I love going to the dog park and watching reality tv. If you’re interested, please reach out and we can schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if we’re a good fit!

For oppressed people to intentionally cultivate pleasure is an act of resistance - Ingrid LaFleur. I specialize in providing culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, poly & kink-friendly, and queer-affirming therapy. My journey as a queer, non-monogamous South Asian neurodivergent woman, along with the experiences of those close to me, deeply shape my approach. I draw on my first-hand knowledge of navigating kink/sex-positive environments. It's important to me to approach therapy with a sense of curiosity and openness so that I can better understand and support my clients. I view each individual within the context of their environment, recognizing the complex intersections of their various identities. I rely on evidenced-based methods that consider the impact of trauma and are attuned to diverse cultural perspectives. In my sessions, I strive to create a safe space for clients to rehearse for life outside of therapy. Building an authentic relationship with my clients is my highest priority. Jiddu Krishnamurti said that it is no measure of health to be adjusted to a society that is profoundly sick and I do not see therapy as a way to numb the pain that is caused by systemic oppression but rather a way to empower clients to have compassion for themselves.
College can be both exciting and overwhelming, a time of exploration, pressure, and major life transitions. I work with students who are learning how to balance it all: academics, relationships, identity, and the uncertainty of what comes next. Whether you’re feeling anxious, stuck, homesick, or unsure about your path, therapy can be a space to slow down, get curious, and reconnect with yourself. I’m currently pursuing my M.A. in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at NYU and earned my B.S. from Emerson College. My approach is person-centered and collaborative, guided by your unique strengths, values, and goals. I often draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps us move through self-doubt, perfectionism, or comparison, and focus on what really matters to you. I especially enjoy working with women, those navigating relationship challenges, stress, or women’s health concerns. My goal is to create a safe, judgment-free space where you can learn to manage difficult emotions, build resilience, and feel more grounded in who you are, both on campus and beyond. Sessions are available in person or virtually. Feel free to reach out by email or phone with any questions or to schedule a free consultation. I have flexible availability.

Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences. She offers psychotherapeutic services in English and French. Her method will encourage and mobilize what she calls the 3 Cs in her patients, i.e. courage, curiosity and creativity. She will support the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, she will foster a deep sense of curiosity in one’s experiences that help shape one’s humanity through self-reflection and self-exploration work, and the use of creativity to allow new spaces to open and be expanded.

I founded Saltaire Psychology PLLC because I believe everyone can use a little help dealing with the chaotic moments in life, including breakups, medical issues, or deaths of loved oneer. I’m here to help you get through those difficult moments and grow from them. The key to building a strong therapeutic relationship is being genuine, providing unconditional support, and showing empathy, and that’s what I try to caaaprovide in my practice. My integrative approach utilizes humanistic, existential, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. I completed my Ph.D. at Fordham University and my internship/post-doctoral training at the Brooklyn VA. I have worked with diverse patients with a wide range of concerns including life transitions, relationship distress, cancer, chronic illness, insomnia, caregiver distress, anxiety, depression, and trauma. I don’t believe that everyone needs to stay in therapy for years and years. Sometimes all you need is a few sessions with a professional. Whether the problems are short-term or long-term, big or small, we can work through them together.
It takes courage to reach out for help. Sometimes, the tools and supports we have aren’t enough to navigate big transitions and changes in our lives, or to make the changes we long for. In those moments, therapy can help us understand what’s holding us back and develop a plan that will help reduce our suffering and increase well-being. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented. I am passionate about partnering with young adults and families in the journey toward healing and believe strongly in providing identity-affirming, culturally responsive care at all stages of the therapeutic process. I specialize in evidence-based treatment for a variety of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, traumatic stress, OCD, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. I also work with individuals who struggle with self-harming behaviors, addiction, and suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. If you are looking for support and not sure where to turn to next, feel free to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
There are 6 therapists including myself in the practice. We are all different in our approaches and areas of expertise. Our fees are flexible, as are our hours. We are offering in-person sessions. All of us have worked with students since the start of our careers. In fact women roughly ages 18-25 is our favorite population to work with. We believe the fit between client and therapist is the most important aspect of therapy. You feeling listened to, not judged and that we are focused on helping you is our goal.
At the heart of my work is the belief that growth begins when we turn inward; not only to solve problems, but to truly listen. Beneath stress, self-doubt, and burnout is often a quieter call for balance, meaning, and wholeness. In our sessions, I’ll invite you to slow down, tune in, and reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been overshadowed by deadlines, expectations, or the pressure to achieve. My approach blends psychodynamic and somatic (body-centered) therapy to explore both your inner world (unconscious patterns, images, and beliefs) and the lived experience of your body, where insight and change can take root. I’m LGBTQIA+ affirming and work with students navigating anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, creative blocks, identity questions, and challenges with eating and body image, relationships, self-worth, or belonging. I’m particularly drawn to working with artists and creatives. What matters most to me is creating a space that is open, safe, and judgment-free; a space where you can explore who you are, discover your own meaning, and move toward a life that feels both authentic and sustainable. We offer affirming psychotherapy and sex therapy for individuals, couples, multiple-partner relationships, and poly and leather families. We are experts in alternative sexualities, specializing in working with adults in the kink/BDSM, polyamorous/non-monogamous, trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary, LGBQIA+, and sex work communities. We work with those who live openly and out; and those who have more conservative and private lifestyles. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including holistic, person-centered, collaborative, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed, IFS, DBT, and EMDR. We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.
