I am an art therapist, as well as a licensed professional counselor, and that means we have a lot of options in our tool box to find what works best for you. What is most important to me is making sure you feel heard, comfortable, and safe (and maybe even laugh once or twice)! I specialize in adolescents as well as young adults/college age clients as they continue to navigate "growing up". Sometimes sessions may be 100% talk therapy, sometimes 100% art/music interventions, and often some mix of both- it is totally up to what you are most comfortable with.
Trauma and pain from past and present experiences can stop you in your tracks, leaving you stuck in the same patterns, of thinking, feeling and behaving that eventually lead to building a life of obligation, duty and fear rather than one of fulfillment, meaning and connection. But with a little help, you can pause, learn tools, gain insights and figure out where and how you need to change direction. You are not responsible for everything that has happened to you AND you are responsible for making meaning from the life you are living. How you do this depends on whom you believe yourself to be. Our work will help you to heal YOU. I understand the connection between empowerment and recovery and believe our choices can change our lives. My work includes: trauma survivors, PTSD, depression, anxiety, serious mental illness, substance use and general/social stressors. My clients include : therapists, all genders, LGBTQ, veterans, African Americans, and diverse races/ethnicities. However, I also believe it’s important to provide you with coping skills to equip you in becoming more independent in managing strong emotions on your own. I have training in trauma focused therapies such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Attachment, Regulation, Competency (ARC), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I also utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) quite often to assist in identifying negative beliefs about yourself and the world that are driving the symptoms and behaviors that might bring you to therapy. One of my favorite parts of therapy is when I can assist someone in developing self-compassion and uncovering their inner strengths and potential. I also utilize creative interventions when appropriate through art, sand tray, and music. I have experience in a variety of settings such as employee assistance programs working with clients of all ages and high school-based counseling.
